Frankish, Lloyd Levin Screenwriter: Phil Alden Robinson, WP Kinsella Film Description: “If you build it, he will come.” That’s the ethereal message that inspires Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) to construct a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield. At first, “he” seems to be the ghost of disgraced ballplayer Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who materializes on the ballfield and plays a few games with the awestruck Ray. But as the weeks go by, Ray receives several other messages from a disembodied voice, one of which is “Ease his pain.” He realizes that his ballfield has been divinely ordained to give a second chance to people who have sacrificed certain valuable aspects of their lives. One of these folks is Salingeresque writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), whom Ray kidnaps and takes to a ball game and then to his farm. My Dad hated this movie…because he was a grouch. This movie is not for grouches.

    I wish Timothy Busfield would have been nailed with a foul ball.
  3. mndeer29 says:
    There is no other voice on this earth that could match James Earl Jones. From Darth Vader to Mufasa, to Mr. Mertal to any character, he will always be the greatest voiced person alive. And when hes gone, no other voice could replace his.
  4. Eiger6 says:
    Two people are bankers who will never be able to see the ghosts on the field.

    @Cagedguitarist401 Can you imagine if they did a movie like Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence? =)) But something more uplifting. Like what they had to endure out in the world and came through the other side from. All the dogs, firehoses, black militants, etc.

    All I know is: if James Earl Jones and Morgan Freeman ever got together to do a dual-narration of a movie, that film would trample on every gross-record in the history of motion picture

    Gives me chills every time

    @Cagedguitarist401 Not just the voice of Vader, he is simply THE voice. He could read the telephone book and I’d be hooked.

    May I ask … have you recently received a copyright notice from youtube stating that content is owned or licensed by NBC Universal? I uploaded Field of Dreams in April 2009 and just received that copyright yesterday (9.20.11). I had almost 50,000 views and it hurt to delete it. Thanks.

    2 people seem to be die hard football fans! There is no other speech that explains the passion of baseball than this one.

    @GeorgeBailey2
    The Making of Field of Dreams part 3 of 3 answers my question. They wanted all of the parts of the scenes that had the biggest dramatic impact to be filmed during the”magical hour” which really was only a 15 minute window. Thus the best parts of these scenes were filmed over the course of days during that time frame and the remainder cut in around it.
  14. GeorgeBailey2 says:
    I wonder if the emotions of the scenes that day caused them to have such continuity problems? Such amazing scenes (Doc saves Karin, Ray’s Not Invited, A Catch With Dad, Ray meets his Dad) that it isn’t until about the 10th time you watch that you notice all of the time of day shifts. My assumption is that it was not intentional but that they were trying to piece together the best takes.

    This one scene shows why James Earl Jones is so much more than the voice of Darth Vader.
  22. TheMeaningOfWithin says:
