The first consultation with a bankruptcy attorney is free. Make an appointment and talk to the attorney (usually you will talk with an aide in the office) and they can tell you what type of bankruptcy you qualify for and what it will cost.

I have a good friend who lost her husband, and she had a lot of debts but was in the same situation as you. The attorney wanted $5,000 to file everything she needed and she couldn’t afford that. Don’t know what she ended up doing, but she never filed bankruptcy.

When you go to your visit, ask what it will cost and how you can pay.

For a Chapter 7 case, attorneys must be paid in full prior to case filing (any money you owe your attorney is dischargeable, like any other debt), but typically they will take payments.

Nearly all consumer bankruptcy attorneys offer free consultations. Take advantage of this to meet with one and get advice based on all of the details of your particular situation. You can find a referral at NACBA.org (National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys).
