non-profit one that has been in your area for years.

try the yellow pages — call all of them and/or check their web site. non-profit ones will tell you so.

check length of time they’ve been in business by asking the bankers to whom you owe money — they know.

The US trustee has a list of approved credit counselors to fulfill the counseling that is required before filing bankruptcy. While you don’t want to file bankruptcy, many of these organizations also offer other services that you may be interested in. I mention this because I would THINK the US Trustee would only approve reputable companies. You can find a list of various organizations at the US Trustee website at http://www.usdoj.gov/ust.

Hope that helps! You have to be careful not to get sucked into using a company that is hurting you rather than helping.
