i wanna buy a harp and i’ve narrowed it down to these three choices…help please!?

right now i have $150 USD. i wanna buy a lap harp, or a small harp under 450 dollars and i don’t want it to be over 4 feet tall. After extensive research and planning, i have narrowed my choices down to three harps:

1. a 22 string heather harp
2. a 38 string cross strung caitlin harp
3. a 29 string minstrel harp

1. the only reason i like this harp is because it is relatively cheap online at just about 276. it is also just 3 feet tall and i have found at least 5 different colors for it on multiple sites (pink, dark blue, dark green, natural wood color and brown). the only thing that is preventing me from buying this one is the range, which is only low C to High C (so there are 4 actual C notes, every other note has 3) i want a lower range because the main song i want to learn first (full metal alchemist brothers song which has a harp melody) goes down to G2. so that’s why i haven’t set my sights on the heather harp yet

2. i’ve been researching for about 12 days, but i just discovered the cross strung harp today. i never realized that it had strings arranged just like the piano. the only thing i don’t like about this is it seems like it’ll be even more difficult to play songs on this. how do you play the strings on a cross strung harp? and the other reason is again, this harp has the same range as the heather harp. for $320 it’s not that expensive so i can get this harp, but the only thing i do not like is the range. other than that, i love how to accidentals are next to the notes.

3. i will gladly substitute arranged accidentals for more range on the strings. only problems with the minstrel harp is the $400+ pricing and the range is still unclear to me. does this harp add an extra octave above or below? i want lower octaves not higher so if this one goes higher then my choices will move towards the cross strung and the plain 22 string one.

this is a really complicated decision, because i want range and pricing to be ‘just right’ please, if you are a harper or harpist, please let me know some more info and help me decide. if you have people you can recommend me to or websites you know about please disclose that information to me so i can better decide in which harp to purchase
if you want to help and need any additional info please email me
thank you very much and God Bless

  1. Doc says:
The Heather harp and the Minstrel harp are of the cheap Pakistani variety. Knowledgeable harpers avoid them entirely. I’m not sure about the maker of the Caitlin cross-strung harp, but it doesn’t look like it’s of terribly good quality. These harps are inexpensive, but truly, you get what you pay for. The strings are of uneven tension, the sound is dull and lacks resonance, and the materials are flimsy. Also, a plywood soundboard, which all three of these harps feature, will not produce a very good sound. These harps will not be very durable; what any harp player must keep in mind is that the strings will constantly be pulling the neck and forepillar of the harp to the left, and a harp has to be built sturdily to accommodate that tension.

The cross-strung harp is considerable more difficult to play; they are unusual and rather more complicated because of the string arrangement. Most harps have sharping levers on all strings. When the lever is engaged, it clamps down on the string, making its vibrating length just that little bit shorter, and allowing for a flat to become a natural, or a natural to become a sharp.
