Is it legal to use clips of videos downloaded from YouTube in another video?

I was wondering if it’s legal to use parts of videos that have been downloaded from YouTube in another video? Like, I’m making a video about conservation and wanted to use clips from the Dr. Seuss movie called “The Lorax”. Well, I found parts of “The Lorax” on YouTube and was thinking about downloading them, but I really didn’t know if it would be legal to use sections of those parts in the video I’m making. Please help?

This video would be for a school presentation thing by the way if that helps.

You need to have the permission of the copyright holder. Usually, YouTube users don’t, and that’s why Viacom is suing Google. You need to read up on “Fair Use” in US Copyright Law, but I would say that it’s probably illegal.

If its not legal then im screwed i always download from youtube to make videos and nothing has happened to me the only problem is the bad quality.

It’s legal under `Fair Use` concept of United States and United Kingdom law. If it’s for your own artistic or journalistic project, then it’s acceptable. If not, then it’s copyright infringement. There are reasonable limits, however, to Fair Use. You can’t, for instance, copy an unreasonably long clip from some copyrighted material without permission, since that would reduce the profits of the copyright holder.

Kudos for thinking of this beforehand. More people should have the foresight and common sense that you do.

I’m no lawyer though, so I don’t know how this works in other countries. What happens, if, for instance, you are in a country that recognises Fair Use, but the copyright holder is not in a country that has any `Fair Use` concept? It could cause problems, to say the least.

Try your luck. YouTube is forced to concentrate on music just now (because of WMG – Warner Music Group) so a little movie action might slip past.

    ask for permission…

also.. this will help you…. Use ‘zillatube’. This is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.

Zillatube produces mpg/mp3 video or sound formats from youtube that are compatible with windows movie maker(or windows media player), and more. Also for high quality conversion, use vcd mode to get good quality mpg file.

Just get those clips you want , save & convert them, and then mix/match with pix/sound/etc using windows movie maker(included in your windows machine) to create new masterpieces..

It is very easy to download and convert videos. Then edit those converted mpg videos with windows movie maker.

    It works very well –

If its original content made by the YouTube user, then yes…

    Review this post:

You may run into copyright issues with the Dr. Seuss videos that you found, however, unless you can determine that these videos were posted by Dr. Seuss’ copyright owner.

    Hope this helps.
