What are some Classical pieces for intermediate Symphony Orchestra?

I’m planning a symphony orchestra workshop for June next year and am kind of stuck for repertoire choices. The workshop is an all day thing (9:30am start, concert in the afternoon sort of thing) so we won’t have a whole lot of rehearsal time. I’d like a nice varied program containing both ‘classics’ that everyone knows and loves as well as something new. Of course, the main focus would be on the educational orchestral experience, not the performance, so playability will be a big factor. The orchestra will have a range of skill levels with the average being Grade 3-4 AMEB, a fair number of beginner string players, and some very advanced musicians. I’m thinking it might be more practical to go for something more challenging and re-write simplified parts for the beginners, rather than choose something too basic for the majority.

This is a symphony orchestra with full string & woodwind sections, and a semi-full brass section (approx. 2 or 3 trumpets, 1 horn, 1 or 2 trombones, maybe a tuba). We can possibly find some percussionists, and have access to a set of two timpani. Harp is a possibility.

I am looking for something musically similar to Beethoven Symphony No. 7 3′rd movement – I think that level of difficulty will work well for us, but the instrumentation isn’t ideal. I’d like something that the brass section actually gets to play.

Any ideas?
